"Bevan Dufty is exactly the type of public official BART needs: a "nuts and bolts" director, as he described himself...Overall, Dufty is the smart choice for the District 9 BART seat."
- Bay Area Reporter
In 44 years of public service, Bevan believes solving individual problems can change the big picture. Beginning at 21, as an aide to the legendary Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, through 25 years serving San Francisco as a Supervisor and City official and now as a BART Director, Bevan has always gone the extra mile
Being accountable and leading by example
As a new BART Director in 2017, Bevan rolled up his sleeves and started weekly cleaning at the 16th Street BART Plazas out of frustration with inadequate maintenance staffing. Supervisor Hillary Ronen joined him and, working together over four months, they moved BART to completely revamp cleaning protocols, including the first-ever maintenance certifications, tripling staffing and dedicated staff so there is real ownership at Stations.
Then in 2018, after videos went viral at Civic Center BART Station, Bevan told the former Police Chief that he was moving into the hallway that had become notorious for open narcotics sales and usage, arriving the following morning at 5:30 a.m. Over the next month, Bevan logged dozens of hours, at all times of day, sitting at a folding table. As Bevan acknowledges, it's not Mayberry but cleanliness and safety conditions at Civic Center have improved, especially with new elevator attendants, regular patrols and, soon, Ambassadors.
